I was a police officer with about two years on the job. I was assigned to Central Division. I was assigned a response squad. We responded to looting calls, force protection for the LAFD as they tried to put out fires.

As a young police officer back then and a Deputy Chief now. I remember how frustrating the days of the riots were. As police officers we wanted to protect the communities, but were unable to due to the sheer volume of calls and people who were looting. Today our relationship with the communities is several times better. Our training and tactics are much better than they were back then. Working together with out communities we will ensure that does not happen again. Being a part of the riots impacted me and still does.
